Overseeing the total project

“This way, even the Chinese cannot win on price”

Every sports club wants to put its stadium or sports fields in their best light. “In practice it appears that it is extremely valuable to look at the right figures at an early stage. List all the facts and then take stock. Make sure that you choose a supplier that is interesting in terms of price throughout the project, and also during its lifetime, but at the same time also offers highquality LED lighting. And don’t forget to ask critical questions. Digging deeper into matters often provides interesting insights, ”concludes Michel van Dooren of AAA-LUX.

Burleigh Heads Bowls Club

Another great project for AAA-LUX in Australia.

This time at the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club, situated close to the beautiful Australian Gold Coast. In this area there is a natural spirit here found in the incredible beaches, the oceans, the surf and the cool waterfalls and deep forests in the hinterland. But there is a human spirit too, dedicated to family, vitality and having the time of your life.

And they also play bowls, at the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club. This welcoming club has a relaxing atmosphere. Here, regardless of age, many people come together to play this outdoor game. In 2019 the Bowls Club wanted to change from conventional lighting to LED lighting, so they decided to team up with AAA-LUX. Their lawns have pristine conditions with full size greens which are floodlit for Night Bowls. Here they can train and play competition all night long.

AAA-LUX LED offers the club bright light in the night, with high quality & high uniformity. Energy consumption is reduced during games. The design of AAA-LUX allows re-use of existing masts and cabling which keeps investment as low as possible. Thanks to wireless controls and fast scene selection, the system is easy to operate.

Burleigh Heads Bowls Club have a great facility with high quality LED lighting, where their hours of joy has now been expanded.

AAA-LUX from Eindhoven already 5 years in Australia

The Netherlands Up-Above, in Down-Under

Last March it was exactly 5 years ago that AAA-LUX delivered the first project in Australia. From then on, things went quickly. At first, AAA-LUX mainly delivered projects in the province of Queensland, around Brisbane where the base of AAA-LUX is located. The densely populated province of Victoria soon followed, particularly around Melbourne.

Recently, however, Calwell, a city near the capital Canberra, was the first project in the province of New South Wales. According to Minister of Sport, Yvette Berry, the new lighting for Calwell is part of a government investment to improve local sports facilities. “This upgrade offers competition lighting in different intensities,” said Berry. “Whether it is on a professional or recreational level, the high-quality lighting will offer both players and fans, who watch from the sidelines, better visibility.

Sports participation in Canberra is very high and the quality of the AAA-LUX LED lighting helps us to meet the demand for better sports accommodations. ”

Case Study Calwell

LED field lighting at RKC Waalwijk

Dutch football club RKC Waalwijk is trying to find its way back to highest level, the Dutch Eredivisie, where they have been playing for years. After their relegation in 2014, RKC Waalwijk is now competing in 2nd league in the Netherlands. The stadium of RKC Waalwijk, with a capacity of 7,500 spectators, has a new lighting system since the start of this season, based on LED. It means in terms of stadium lighting they have already been promoted.

Looking for The Way Up

RKC Waalwijk is a relatively young professional football club. After years of playing in the highest amateur leagues, the club made the switch to professional soccer in 1984. That soon proved to be successful, as in 1988 RKC promoted to the Eredivisie where they were active for 19 seasons. There were even some European matches played and a 7th place in the Eredivisie was the highest position. However, in 2007 they were relegated for the first time, followed by a period of several years switching between the highest and second Dutch league. Since the 2014/2015 season, RKC Waalwijk has been playing in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie with minimal financial resources. After several years in financial dire straits, the club made plans for a better future again with a complete stadium renovation RKC as the first step.

A Complete Renovation of the Stadium

General Director Frank van Mosselveld: “Over the past twenty years, hardly any maintenance has been carried out on the stadium. When you pay us a visit, the first impression is much better now. Everything looks a lot more modern, spacious and neat. People will see a lot of glass, wood and anthracite. The view of the stadium is not the only thing that has been renewed, the stadium lighting of RKC Waalwijk has also completely been replaced. “RKC Waalwijk has converted its stadium to Eredivisie level, we wanted to implement this in all facilities and therefor also in the stadium lighting. The choice to also replace the lighting was simple. “With the old lighting we often had to deal with faults and age. It was simply out of date and clumsy to operate,” says Van Mosselveld.

Smart Solutions in Stadium lighting

RKC Waalwijk has the ambition to return to the Dutch Eredivisie. “To be able to take these steps, the facilities first had to be of top level. In addition, the old lighting installation would no longer pass the inspection,” says Van Mosselveld. The existing masts in the stadium could be re-used, provided that the load would not increase. That was the challenge. “LED luminaires are usually larger and heavier than conventional luminaires because a larger surface area is required for heat transfer. For most LED manufacturers this leads to more mas which would make the re-use of existing masts a difficult task,” explains Raymond Wiggers of AAA-LUX. Thanks to the smart design of AAA-LUX, we are the only manufacturer in the world that can re-use the existing masts with an all-in product  including power supply.” concludes Wiggers.

Preserving the Existing Stadium Masts

AAA-LUX has installed 80 WS-STAD stadium LED luminaires in the Mandemakers Stadium. “These 80 LED fixtures produce a high light output, allowing AAA-LUX to achieve the necessary light values. In short, the required light level is achieved with fewer and lighter luminaires. This works to the advantage of RKC Waalwijk, as it allowed the old stadium masts to be retained,” explains Wiggers. “Convenient from a cost perspective” adds Van Mosselveld. “This saves us from having to make extra investments in new or extra stadium masts. In addition, RKC Waalwijk has possibilities to expand. “Thanks to the low weight of the AAA-LUX stadium LED luminaires, it is even possible to install more luminaires later on, without exceeding the mast capacity,” concludes Wiggers.

Ready to Compete

With the renewed stadium lighting and the renovation of the stadium, RKC Waalwijk is once again ready to compete. “The KNVB sets lighting requirements for the professional soccer clubs. The requirement for the Keuken Kampioen Divisie is 800 lux horizontal. With the switch to LED stadium lighting, RKC again meets this requirement,” explains Wiggers. The KNVB has not set any strict requirements for the vertical light values. “But the stadium masts at RKC are perfect for achieving this. We always try to offer the best possible vertical light, even if there are no concrete requirements. Now the stadium amply meets the vertical lighting requirements of UEFA Level D. In the Mandemakers Stadium, FOX Sports and photographers already obtain images of high quality. The TV images speak for themselves,” says Wiggers. An upgrade to UEFA Level C is also within easy reach. More vertical light ensures better HDTV recording. This is not currently required for RKC Waalwijk but as soon as the club becomes more successful and operates at a European level, the expansion possibilities are there.

Always in Control

The stadium in Waalwijk uses the smart control system. The 80 LED luminaires are controlled wirelessly using pre-programmed dimming scenes. “During a match, the lighting is at 100%. During training courses, we simply set a lower lighting setting,” explains Van Mosselveld. As a result, RKC Waalwijk always illuminates its stadium at the right time at the desired level. This minimises energy consumption and light emissions to the immediate surroundings. “The quality of the lighting is excellent, and we can already see that we are using less energy. These are exactly the reasons why we chose AAA-LUX,” says Van Mosselveld. Apart from arguments about finances and lighting quality, the possibility to always select the desired light level of LED lighting also offers a nice contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and thus improves our carbon footprint as a football club.

Continuous Innovation

To remain a front runner in LED sport field lighting, continuous innovation is a must. Actually while writing this case study, the light output of AAA-LUX’ stadium luminaires has been increased. It means today, 9 months after installation, AAA-LUX would use 72 luminaires instead of 80, to achieve the same lighting levels in this stadium. And it will not stop here …

Evening Golf in Dubai

LED lighting at Emirates Golf Club

High temperatures during the day make playing golf in the Middle East not a very attractive idea. To enable games in the relatively cool evenings, Emirates Golf Club in Dubai has lit their complete 18 holes golf course and driving range. Recently the many hundreds of conventional luminaires have been replaced with AAA-LUX LED. This has cut their energy consumption to less than half.

Re-use of infrastructure

The golf course experienced that finding a LED solution that can fit the existing masts and cabling, is not as obvious as it seems. Most LED luminaires that can match the light output of conventional 2kW light fixtures, exceed mast limits in weight and wind surface; they are larger and heavier because of the need for more cooling surface.

Stunning view

Here at this amazingly beautiful golf course, AAA-LUX’  product features made the difference once again. The LED luminaire is the lightest in the market and has the lowest wind resistance using an all-in product including driver, it’s easy and fast to install with minimal additional investment needed. “Also thanks to the wireless controls, things become extremely efficient”, says Raymond Wiggers, Sales Manager at AAA-LUX headquarters in Eindhoven.

In recent years in the Middle East region as well as in Europa, multiple golf projects have been equipped with LED lighting from AAA-LUX. Some even larger than this one in Dubai. “These kinds of beautiful projects are a great addition to the hundreds of projects we carry out each year”, according to Wiggers, adding with a big smile, “and let’s be honest, what a stunning view at Emirates Golf Course in Dubai”.

We like to thank our partner Abacus for cooperation in this project.

Inspiration for a new year of growth

The AAA-LUX 2019 Reseller event was a  great success. A large part of our international partner network yearly joins us at the AAA-LUX head office in the Netherlands, to obtain the latest updates and training on our products. There was a special welcome to four of our new partners from Malaysia, Spain, Poland and Finland. They help us drive our sustainable impact beyond our current 45 countries worldwide, working together on brand awareness, sharing best practices and learning to build strong foundations for the future.

The event was the commercial release of several new developments in luminaires, controls and service, which underlines the company mission “making sustainable high power illumination accessible for more people”. The sustainable  aspect was even more highlighted, whilst visiting other sustainable Eindhoven entrepreneurs such as Piet Hein Eek and Seven Steps to Heaven. Piet Hein Eek is an industrial designer who commits his work to making furniture using waste materials. We visited his factory and gallery in Eindhoven for our evening program and dinner. We also paid a visit to Seven Steps to Heaven, who develop and promote advanced indoor-farming technology.

We can proudly look back on a successful week. Events like this empower network and form an inspiration for a new year of growth. Our international sales team is ready to take on new challenges in our expanding LED market in 2019 and beyond!

More professional sports clubs choose LED lighting

An interesting development is happening in professional football.

More and more clubs chose to light their stadiums with LED lighting. This does not only include the larger stadiums, but also the smaller stadiums and training accommodations. AAA-LUX, one of the leading suppliers of LED lighting, delivers to more and more clubs in for example the German Bundesliga, the English Premier League, Dutch Football  and the Italians Serie A, and, for instance, also several training accommodations for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

Smart stadium renovation
Not only the larger stadiums are choosing LED lighting. Remarkably, there is an increase in smaller stadiums and practice fields. Since the start of this season, RKC Waalwijk, a club from the Dutch second division, has a new lighting system in their stadium that runs completely on LED. The switch from conventional to LED lighting has pleased RKC Waalwijk. “RKC Waalwijk has renovated their stadium to the premier division standards and we wanted to carry this out throughout all our facilities, including the stadium lighting.  It is a sustainable solution of high quality with interesting cost reductions. The existing masts could easily be re-used, provided that no extra weight would be applied to the masts. Due to the light weight of the AAA-LUX luminaires, this was not a problem and thus new masts were not necessary. And that is beneficial to the costs,” Frank van Mosselveld, general manager of RKC Waalwijk, explains.

Accessible for more clubs
Converting from conventional light to LED lighting is not as easy as it seems. “Generally, LED luminaires are larger and heavier than conventional luminaires. For the transfer of heat, a larger surface is needed. With many LED manufacturers, this leads to more mass. As a result, it can be a difficult task to re-use existing masts,” Michel Van Dooren, AAA-LUX, explains. In 2009, AAA-LUX was the first in the world to come up with a real retrofit solution. To date, they are still the only European manufacturer with such a solution. “Because of this, the existing masts can be used in 90% of all cases. This makes a huge difference in investment, by which LED lighting becomes accessible for more clubs,” Van Dooren concludes.

LED lighting offers interesting advantages
The Berger Feld training center in Gelsenkrichen Germany, owned by the local Bundesliga club named after the Schalke district, shows why LED lighting is so effective and interesting. There are 10 training fields and besides that, the former Volksparkstadium is rebuilt to a compact stadium for Young-Schalke. Because of the uplift renovation of the whole training center there was a clear demand for better lighting. Moreover, the “flicker free”-properties of LED result in better camera recordings. Training sessions are recorded for analysis purposes at many professional football clubs. “The German club approached us to develop this project. We took the existing infrastructure, that was designed for conventional light, and used it for LED lighting. Furthermore, the German club can dim the light thanks to the wireless operating system and always select the desired level of lighting. This results in a considerable reduction of energy consumption,” Michel van Dooren, AAA-LUX, says.

LED lighting is a smart and sustainable solution
These specific design choices madee by AAA-LUX, make LED lighting accessible for more professional and non-professional sports clubs. And that is a good development. LED lighting does not only produce more and better light for players, audience and television registration, it also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint helping to protect our beautiful planet.

Case Study Rietlanden Coal Terminal

LED lighting installed on 45 meters high masts

In recent years AAA-LUX has managed to carve out its reputation of being a specialist in developing LED luminaires that illuminate large areas or areas where high-quality illumination is required. That’s why the Rietlanden Coal Terminal choose for AAA-LUX LED lighting to illuminate their harbour area from 45 meters high masts. This was something never done before with LED technology, yet AAA-LUX mananged to achieve high-quality LED illumination from 45 meters height

After AAA-LUX succesfully installed LED lighting on 45 meters high masts, Rietlanden Coal Terminal assigned AAA-LUX to illuminate the rest of it’s areas as well. This included the washing bay for its vehicles as well as parking areas and service areas at its site in the port of Amsterdam.
Only using AAA-LUX technology allows Rietlanden coal terminal to control and manage the illumination through only one system. AAA-LUX LED technology that is controlled through the AAA-LUX Lighting Control Management System (LCMS) can achieve significant additional energy savings over and above the fact that LED technology itself consumes significantly less energy than conventional luminaires do.
