Spal brings AAA-LUX to the Serie A

Thanks to the second consecutive championship of Italian football club Spal, AAA-LUX LED floodlights will be illuminating Serie A matches against the likes of Juventus or AC Milan next season.

Spal and AAA-LUX became a team in 2014 when the municipality of Ferrara decided to invest in new floodlight technology to illuminate its local football stadium. It made Spal the first Italian football club to embrace LED illumination technology. It also made them one of the first clubs in Europe that adopted LED illumination. The investment was necessary as the stadium illumination didn’t meet the requirements that had been set by the Italian FA. Unless the floodlights of their home venue were improved, Spal would have been forced to play its home games at a different venue.

Ferrara Municipality invested in AAA-LUX LED technology.

“Spal was playing in the Serie C at the time, better known as the Lega Pro. The club used to be a regular contender in the Italian highest division until they got relegated in 1968. In the years thereafter the club experienced many problems and struggled to stay afloat. In 2012 it was at the brink of bankruptcy until the new manager decided to take another approach. He appointed a new management team and adopted a more sustainable approach. By the end of the first season under new management, Spal managed to secure promotion to the Serie C,” says Michel van Dooren of AAA-LUX. “Even matches in the Italian Serie C are televised, hence the need for sufficient horizontal and vertical illumination to assist the camera’s capturing all the action. Ferrara Municipality had drafted a long list with specifications they expected the supplier to meet. They wanted to be sure that they would receive the illumination intensity and uniformity they required.”

Another, but very important thing they specified was the need for the luminaires to remain within the weight and shape boundaries of the conventional luminaires. “The existing masts couldn’t take any additional floodlight anymore as they were already loaded to capacity.” By replacing the conventional floodlights with several intense AAA-LUX LED luminaires, the Paolo Mazza stadium in Ferrara managed to meet the illumination requirements. The new AAA-LUX LED floodlights also adhered to the weight and dimension requirements. “AAA-LUX is the only supplier of a LED luminaire that can be used as a one-on-one replacement for conventional floodlights,” Van Dooren continues. All AAA-LUX LED luminaires are designed with the weight and shape of conventional luminaires in mind.

As the saying goes: the rest is history!

The club came very close but failed to claim the Lega Pro championship in their first year. The year after, Spal got crowned Champion of the Serie C at the end of the 2014/2015 season. As arrangements with Sky TV dictates that games in the Serie B would require even more illumination, AAA-LUX added several additional LED luminaires to the stadium in the wake of the 2016/2017 season. It worked for Spal. Last night, the team bagged another championship trophy when they won the Serie B. Spal will now return to the Italian Serie A for the first time in 49 years.

AAA-LUX congratulates all players, fans and management of Spal with their latest success! We will make sure that your heroic story and battles will be well-captured by the camera’s when you take on renowned clubs in the Italian Serie A next season.
